Lighting, Shadows for transformation

Just kinda came across this picture. don't you think the lighting is beautiful(of the figure in the forefront)! this could be so effective for the bird transformation. Do you think we should maybe use a white backdrop and just project onto it, that way its more flexible to create different effects. Though could we submerge the audience in darkness with a white back drop??
